Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT KGP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Technische Universitat Darmstadt, Germany, to foster collaboration in academic, research and innovation initiatives on 24th May, 2025. This significant step follows the visit of a seven-member delegation from the Technische Universitat Darmstadt to IIT Kharagpur on March 20, 2025.

The IIT Kharagpur delegation, led by Prof. Rintu Banerjee, Deputy Director, IIT Kharagpur, including Prof. Rabibrata Mukherjee, Dean Research & Development; Prof. Debashish Chakravarty, Dean International Relations; Prof. Bhargab Maitra, Dean Student Affairs and Prof. Swati Maitra, Ranbir Chitra Gupta School of Infrastructure Design and Management, held detailed discussions with Prof. Thomas Walther, Vice-President for Innovation and International Affairs, and his team from Technische Universitat Darmstadt.
Dr. Jana Freihöfer, Dean of International Affairs discussed a range of disciplines, including robotics, AI, mechanical, aerospace, computer science & engineering, electrical, electronics engineering disciplines, political science, biological sciences, medical sciences, biotechnology, industrial engineering, and others. The meeting was marked by active engagement and sharing of insights on potential areas for joint academic and research programs, reinforcing the strategic priorities of both institutions.
Speaking on the collaboration, Prof. Rintu Banerjee, Deputy Director, IIT Kharagpur remarked, “The MoU covers the academic and research collaboration between two institutes in all areas of mutual interest and includes the possibilities of faculty and students exchange and SAP.”
The MoU sets a framework for both institutions to explore innovative opportunities for cooperation, including student and faculty exchange programs, joint research projects, and shared academic ventures. It is envisaged that several collaborative academic and research programs will emerge from this strategic partnership.
