IIT KGP gets Post Office Passport Seva Kendra

The IIT KGP community has a new reason to rejoice just ahead of the festive season. The campus has got a Post Office Passport Seva Kendra which has started operations from September 27, 2018.

The center is located at the Head Post Office in the IIT KGP campus, near the primary entry point to the campus. The center will typically handle upto 30 appointments in a day.

Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) is an initiative by the Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India and the Department of Posts, to extend passport related services on a larger scale and to ensure wider area coverage. The Head Post Office (HPO) in the various states are being utilized as Post Office Passport Seva Kendra for delivering passport related services to the citizens of the country.

“More than 200 students visit various foreign countries each year for internships, conferences, competitions etc. Many of them do not have passports and visit the nearest Passport Seva Kendra in Kolkata which is about 140 km away. It is a welcome change for such students,” said Vishal Singh, Vice President, Technology Students’ Gymkhana and the official representative of the students at IIT Kharagpur.

Applicants would be required to obtain appointments through the online mode (www.passportindia.gov.in). Tatkaal, On-Hold files, walk-in and PCC applications will not be accepted and processed in POPSK.

“We hope to bring in all the amenities into campus in due course,” said Prof. P P Chakrabarti, Director, IIT Kharagpur.
