IIT Kharagpur inks MoU with HCLTech to Jointly Develop Innovative and Sustainable Solutions for Petroleum Industry

IIT Kharagpur inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with HCLTech, a leading global technology company on 31 May 2023, to collaborate in the field of petroleum engineering and earth sciences. HCLTech and IIT Kharagpur will jointly develop innovative and sustainable solutions to address critical challenges of the petroleum industry including reduction of carbon footprint and provide significant sustainable solutions towards net zero carbon emissions.

Academia and industry need to forge such symbiotic partnerships that will be instrumental in advancing research and innovation in technology, besides creating a skilled workforce. Joint activities in research and knowledge development have tremendous potential for creating economic and social impact on society,” said Prof. Chandan Chakraborty, Dean (R&D), IIT Kharagpur.

Under the agreement, HCLTech will work to provide opportunities to students and research scholars from IIT Kharagpur to undertake projects and internships at the company, using state-of-the-art technologies to develop digital solutions in the exploration, drilling and production of hydrocarbons. Both IIT Kharagpur and HCLTech will initiate collaboration on programmes of sustainability that includes discussions, podcasts and joint presentations at international forums on transformative initiatives in the oil and gas sector.

IIT Kharagpur inks an MoU with ONGC

Under the aegis of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur signed an MoU with the Institute of Drilling Technology (IDT) of Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) Limited to undertake several collaborative R&D projects in the domain of drilling, drilling fluids, cementing fluids and completion fluids. The MoU was signed between Shri. G.A.V.S. Prasad, HOI, IDT, ONGC and Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Dean R&D, IIT Kharagpur in the presence of Shri. O. P. Singh, Director, Field and Technical Services, ONGC who was the special guest of honour.

Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Dean R&D, IIT Kharagpur remarked, “I believe that this is a landmark MoU that will surely provide a new perspective to our Lab-to-Market transitional research initiatives, by interlacing the academia, R&D and Industry altogether in a uniquely threaded framework that is rare in the national context.”

One of the R&D projects for the development of thermally stable drilling fluids has already been initiated by Prof. Sandeep D. Kulkarni, Deysarkar Centre of Excellence in Petroleum Engineering as Principal Investigator and Prof. Kiran Gore, Department of Chemistry which has been positively received by IDT, ONGC.

Prof. Sandeep Kulkarni, PI, Deysarkar Centre of Excellence in Petroleum Engineering, IIT Kharagpur, said,The collaborative Research & Development (R&D) between both the institutions will highlight industrial and inter-disciplinary research efforts undertaken at Deysarkar Centre of Excellence in Petroleum Engineering at IIT Kharagpur.”

To strengthen the industrial and interdisciplinary research in cost-effective exploration activities, the collaborative Research & Development (R&D) will further initiate several other domains or areas of expertise for developing indigenous technologies. The Institute of Drilling Technology (IDT) of ONGC) is responsible for providing techno-economic expertise and solutions to problems faced by the ONGC. It aims at providing cost-effective exploration and production activities.

Prof. V K Tewari, Director, IIT Kharagpur stated, “As India is becoming an important link to the global supply chain and its position in the international trade dynamics is at its best ever, these industry-academia collaborations will entail to robust technological development in holistic domains and will also enable the students of IIT Kharagpur to be industry ready.”

IIT KGP and Houston University to Promote Collaborative Programs in Petroleum Engineering

IIT Kharagpur and the University of Houston have signed MoU for joint academic and research collaborations. The initial areas of work identified include Petroleum Engineering, covering niche aspects of Chemical, Advanced Materials, Deep Sea Technology and Analytics and Industrial Engineering, confirmed Prof. P P Chakrabarti, Director, IIT Kharagpur, in a social media post.

On September 14, 2018, a team of delegates from IIT Kharagpur visiting USA led by the Director, met Dr. Renu Khator, Chancellor the University of Houston System and President of University of Houston. The team also met Dr. Joseph W. Tedesco, Dean of Cullen College of Engineering and Dr. Jamie Ortiz, Vice-Provost, UH Global Strategies and Studies.

The University of Houston is a leader in energy research and environmental education among others. It serves the Houston and Gulf Coast regions through experiential learning, industry partnerships and the interdisciplinary Energy Research Park.

In 2016, IIT Kharagpur has set up the Deysarkar Centre of Excellence in Petroleum Engineering funded by distinguished alumni Asoke Deysarkar and Ruma Acharya Deysarkar. It is targeted towards Industry-Academia Synergy and innovation and training platform for future leaders in the energy sector. The departments of Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy and Materials Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering and Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture too attract best-in-class faculty and students.

The two institutions with their focus in energy and associated areas would collaborate on interdisciplinary academic and research programs.

In addition to this, the MoU includes scope for mutual cooperation programmes to promote regional understanding of India and USA, faculty development and improving the international experience of students.

IIT Kharagpur also signed an MoU with University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to explore opportunities in Blue Economy. Read More
