IIT Kharagpur ranks 6th in NIRF Ranking 2022

Since Independence, India has made reasonable progress in providing accessible ‘Education for All’, strengthening higher education. With the increase in the number of higher education institutions across the country, the quality of education has continued to remain a serious concern specially when the entire country was suffering because of the pandemic that still lives with us. As per UNICEF’s report 2020, more than 376 million students worldwide suffered because of the pandemic. Remote/Online Education became the only source of education followed by a technological transition that turned the entire world into a ‘Global Village’. The education institutions faced many challenges to manage and pace up with the new era of engaging digital knowledge, enhancing the wide spectrum of e-learning. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 which outlines the vision of the new education system of India with a comprehensive framework for elementary education to higher education as well as vocational training in both rural and urban India, aims to increase the Gross Enrollment Ratio in higher education including vocational education from 26.3% in 2018 to 50% by 2035.

In order to recognize the higher education system in India, National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was launched in November 2015. National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is a methodology adopted by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, to rank institutions of higher education in India. NIRF Ranking 2022 of top performing colleges in India has been released by the Honorable Union Minister of Education Shri Dharmendra Pradhan on July 15, 2022. The list includes top 100 ranking colleges and Universities in the field of Engineering, Management, Medical, Dental, Law and Architecture. Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur has secured an overall 6th ranking in the latest National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2022. The institute ranked 5th in Engineering, 6th in Law and 12th in the Management discipline. IIT Kharagpur is placed 5th as a Research Institution. The Architecture department of the Institute ranked 3rd among all its native peers in the country.  The top engineering college rankings are mostly dominated by the IITs in the country.

Every higher education institution in the country will now be rated by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), said the Union Education Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan while stressing on the fact that the MoE is attempting to unify institutional accreditation by next year. Robust and unified system for assessment, accreditation and ranking will play a major role in enhancing the quality of higher education. The minister added that going forward the NIRF accreditation system will expand to include every single school in India. This accreditation procedure will be mandatory. He also asserted that self declaration and transparency will be the basis of this particular assessment and accreditation. The Hon’ble Minister remarked, “By next year, we will unify institutional accreditation, which is presently done by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and the programme accreditation which is presently done by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).”

While the NIRF is of recent origin, its importance can be determined by the fact that only universities and colleges with NAAC grading or NIRF ranking are eligible for inclusion in the University Grants Commission list for receiving financial assistance. The Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), the group of prestigious engineering institutes across India, continued to dominate the top 25 ranks in the Engineering category. For the third consecutive year, 14 out of the top 25 engineering institutions belonged to the IIT ecosystem. Moreover, seven of the first 10 places were held by the IITs.

Speaking on the NIRF Rankings 2022, Prof. Amit Patra, Deputy Director, IIT Kharagpur remarked, “Overall IIT Kharagpur has retained its positioning as an Institute that imparts technical education with multidisciplinary mandate as envisioned in NEP 2020. However, we need to improvise our strategies to prioritize our lab to market propositions and sharpen our research focus to initiate and engage in industry-academia collaboration. Also, there is a need to acknowledge study and explore different genres that inculcates a sense of responsibility towards societal development.”

NIRF Rankings are released annually by the Ministry of Education, Government of India assessing the quality and performance of higher educational institutions in India. The overall ranking is prepared based on the parameters such as Teaching, Learning, Resource Quality, Research, Professional Practice, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach, Inclusivity and Peer Perception. There has been a rise in total institutions applying for the NIRF rankings since 2016. As per the government, 4,786 institutions applied for rankings under the overall category-specific and domain-specific rankings this year. The number of institutions applying for rankings has increased by over 97 per cent – from 2,426 in 2016 to 4,786 in 2022.

A New Era of Schooling

How is teaching & learning being carried out at IIT Kharagpur’s campus schools?

Schooling has entered a new era with ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown. As contact classrooms have been shut down,  schools across India are reinventing the educational system. Blackboards, benches, workbooks have been replaced by computers, smartphones, video lectures, conferencing applications, assignment modules.

There are three schools on the campus upto higher secondary level and one school upto its primary section. The schools have gone digital since March 21, 2020. DAV Model School and Kendriya Vidyalas share the experiences with The Kgp Chronicle.

DAV Model School at IIT Kharagpur started online classes March 27 keeping in view the disrupted academic calendar due to the ongoing pandemic. The school has facilitated online classes through Zoom App, YouTube, ePathshala, Diksha, NDLI resources, Tata classedge, Snap Homework app, forming Whatsapp groups while assignments are being regularly uploaded on the school’s website.

“It is the time when students need the teachers, their ‘second parents’, to protect and take care of their tender minds and unknown apprehensions. Team DAV Model School IIT Kharagpur has taken up the challenge to the extent that not just academic disciplines but even creative classes such as dance, music, art and craft, and yoga are being conducted on online mode,” said Principal Lopa Chatterjee.

The School is also recommending resources from the National Digital Library of India developed by IIT Kharagpur.

“We are sharing text and reference materials from NDLI which students. Both teachers and students have been using this platform extensively,” added Lopa Chatterjee.

Another school on campus, Kendriya Vidyalaya IIT Kharagpur, is also conducting classes on various online modes, sharing video lessons and assignments. The school is using free e-resources such as NROER, DIKSHA, SWAYAM, SWAYAM PRABHA, NPTEL, NCERT and NIOS. WhatsApp groups are used significantly for doubt clearing sessions.

“The link to all these apps/websites have been provided to students and teachers through Vidyalaya website for their optimum use by them. Some materials on Creative and Critical Thinking Skills, Program for International Students Assessment have been uploaded on the Vidyalaya website for exposure and practice of students under supervision of teachers. We are also in the process of exploring other means and methods for conducting online live classes by our teachers,” said Principal Bal.

Both the schools have prepared separate time table for online teaching which is being updated on the websites of the respective schools.

Preparing for the role

IIT Kharagpur is currently holding the MHRD inspired and sponsored LEAP program (May 13-24). Announced in November 2018 by the MHRD, LEAP is a three-week flagship ‘Leadership development’ training programme for second level academic functionaries in public funded higher education institutions under the Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT) Scheme. Two weeks are dedicated to domestic training and the third week to foreign training.

The objective of the program is to prepare a second tier of academic heads who may have to assume leadership roles in the future. LEAP fulfils a long-felt need for preparing the senior faculty of the premier institutes of the country for future governance roles.

This program engages senior faculty- such as Deans and Heads of Departments – who have at least 8 years of experience in the grade of Professor and at least three years’ experience in administrative positions. The program provides them the opportunity to develop the required leadership and managerial skills, including skills of problem-solving, stress management, team-building, conflict management, better communication, understanding and coping with the complexity and challenges of governance in financial or administrative roles.

Prof. Adrijit Goswami, Dean, Continuing Education, the Department of IIT Kharagpur which is organizing the program, said, “Today, those assuming top administrative positions in an academic institution, such as that of the Director of Vice-Chancellor, now have multifarious responsibilities. They have to deal with the ministry, industry, international academia, funding bodies and so on. This program helps one prepare for the role.”

IIT Kharagpur is one of the 15 top academic institutions in the country – which include IITs, NITs, IISERs, TISS, DU and other institutes – which have been selected to run the course. Prof. M.K. Tiwari, program coordinator for IIT Kharagpur, said, “This is a judicious mix of institutions, and the program will help enhance the educational ecosystem in India.”

The venue of IIT Kharagpura’s LEAP, currently being held in Kolkata, will shift to the campus from May 20-24. The final leg of the program will be held in association with IFM, the University of Cambridge from June 3-7. There are four participants from IIT Kharagpur of the 28 who are attending IIT Kharagpur’s LEAP program.

Prof. Goswami, said, “Speakers at IIT Kharagpur’s LEAP have been chosen with great care. They are mostly Directors or former Directors, or top administrators of premier higher educational institutes, or from the industry, such as K. Anant Krishnan from TCS, or R. Gopalakrishnan of Tata Sons Ltd. Mr Parth S. Ghosh, policy advisor, strategist for Corporates and Governments, and alumni of IIT Kharagpur was also there for four days. There is also a top paramilitary officer, IGF S. Raveendran, who will talk on stress managment.”

Mr Ghosh, who has also seed-funded the forthcoming Academy of Leadership in IIT Kharagpur, spoke on the ‘DNA of leadership’ and ‘Visionary Leadership – for next generation Industrial and Social Revolution’. Mr Krishnan spoke on ‘Collaborative Leadership – Team Building, Delegating powers’ and Mr Gopalakrishnan on ‘Organizational leadership’ and ‘Charismatic or transformational leadership’.

Director, IIT Kharagpur, Prof. Partha Pratim Chakrabarti, whose talk on ‘Anatomy of the Academic System’ included slides on cricket, said, “I am grateful to the stalwarts for sharing their knowledge and experiences to the next generation in a unique programme for developing the next generation. Lot of interesting ideas generated through discussions and assignments!”

Apart from hearing out speakers, field research, the program will expect the participants to research and write a substantive essay within the field of the programme for the Institution. The topic will normally be based on the interests and skills the participants develop through the program.

The participants will be evaluated based on several leadership attributes like problem solving abilities, handling stress; managing conflicts, decision making etc. and this assessment will be formulated in consultation with experts.

The final round of IIT Kharagpur’s LEAP will be held in UK in June. The star speakers for the program from May 20-24 in the campus will be Swami Atma Priyanand on ‘Code of Excellence’, Santanu Choudhury on ‘Leadership Everywhere – People in the Academic Institutions’, Srikumar Banerjee on ‘Power and authority – Financial Management and Planning’, Prof. Partha Pratim Chakrabarti on ‘Future of Leaders and Leaders of Future- -Creating/ Developing Leadership’ and Prof. Sriman Kumar Bhattacharyya on ‘Building Futuristic Infrastructure’.
