Doing good is simple

Times of India     India Today On March 26 2019, the Director of IIT Kharagpur, Prof. Partha Pratim Chakrabarti, proudly flagged off a truck bearing a small hoarding which said, “Technology Transfer to the Government of Tripura”. The vehicle carried a consignment of five machines produced by the Rural Design Innovation Centre of IIT Kharagpur. In it were four gas-based puffed rice (muri) making machines and one motorized dehusker or dhenki in Bengali. This is the third consignment that is making its way to distant Agartala. In fond memory of Ranjan Khastgir

We are deeply saddened by the demise of our much respected and admired alumnus, Shiva Ranjan Khastgir (1957/BTech/ME/AZ). He passed away at home in Kolkata, surrounded by his family, on March 18, 2019. Lovingly referred as ‘Khasta’ by his friends, many of whom continued to be in close touch with him long after their graduation from college, Ranjan Khastgir was a frontrunner among those who are the life force of the Technology Alumni Association of Kolkata. He was a former President of TAA, Calcutta Chapter, and strived hard to bring together IITians of all “shape and vintage under a common…

Breakfast with Ron

At the Distinguished Service award ceremony at IIT Kharagpur in January 2019, Prof. Partha Pratim Chakrabarti, Director, IIT Kharagpur, laid bare a fact that should have been pretty obvious but, as usual, had not occurred to anybody else. While talking about IIT KGP alumni’s contribution to the Institute, Prof. Chakrabarti referred to the recent hoopla over the donation pledge of Rs 25 crore undertaken by the alumni of a particular IIT and pointed out, “Among several batches, more than Rs 50 crore has been given by the Batch of 1970 alone.” There are, of course, other batches, which have donated…

Gone too soon

Gone too soon

There are not too many who can act as a bridge across peoples, cultures, disciplines, institutions and vocations  – all at the same time. Lord Sushanta Kumar Bhattacharyya was one of them. Renowned academic, successful entrepreneur, manufacturing expert and leading consultant to industry and government across geographies, this eminent alumnus of IIT Kharagpur donned many caps and influenced many lives. Not surprisingly, his demise on March 1, 2019, has come as a rude shock not only to the people of Britain, where he lived and worked, but also to multitudes of individuals and institutions who gained from his genius; our…

Earn your spurs

Science and technology can be used to create a number of innovations useful in various facets of life. Sometimes the true value of a research work remains unexplored and the innovator is unable to fully exploit the invention commercially. A different situation may arise where some other person copies or misuses an invention without the permission of the true inventor. So it is essential to protect the right of an inventor which not only prevents misuse and copying of an invention but also promotes further innovation.  Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) are a kind of legal right which gives privileges to…

Feel like going to the nearest city? You can take a flight from the mini airport of IIT Kharagpur. In a hurry to go to class? You can either hop onto the toy train going around the campus or the driverless cars zipping across. How would it feel to work in a nuclear power plant? Just go to class, put on the VR headset and find out. It’s raining cats and dogs and you still need to train for the inter-IIT sports meet? No worries. You have a dome over the Jnan Ghosh stadium. You could say if wishes were…

The future of medicine

The future of medicine

In May 2018, IIT Kharagpur set up India’s pioneering Bioelectronics Innovation Laboratory to develop futuristic battery-free implantable medical devices for the treatment of brain, nerve, muscle or spinal cord disorders that are untreatable by using standard medical practices. These medical devices will go a long way in providing affordable and reliable medical solutions. The laboratory will facilitate energy-efficient electronic system development, biocompatible packaging, bio-reliability assessment and animal testing rooms as a unified platform for an end-to-end intelligent medical system development. Prof. Sudip Nag of the Department of Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering of IIT Kharagpur is heading the initiative. The…
