Three decades and counting!

“September 24th 1982. I joined IIT Kharagpur as a Lower Division Clerk, giving in to my parents repeated requests. Today, after spending more than two-thirds of my life here, I do not regret the decision of my parents.

At desk

Rubber Technology Center had started the year before, in 1981. With no one to look into office work there, I was posted in that department as secretary to the HoD. My job profile consisted of mainly typing and maintaining office records. I stayed there from 1982 to 1987. With my promotion in 1987, I joined the Recruitment Section for a few days and was later transferred to the Deans’ Office. In 1989 I was posted in GATE office initially and then SRIC office. I served there for perhaps the longest time – from 1992 to 2006 – a good 14 years!

SRIC office, IIT Kharagpur

During my tenure at the SRIC office I was in the team of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system which happens to be synonymous with IIT Kharagpur. This system was started by Prof R. N. Banerjee. We, as a team, were thinking of introducing a new system of documentation. ERP was initially a project mode of SRIC headed by Prof Banerjee and we were involved in providing all information to this pilot project for its smooth functioning – details of accounting, administration and project monitoring – all had to be fed into the project, which was further programmed by Prof Banerjee with the help of his students.

Since then, ERP has become an integral part of IIT-KGP system and has been upgraded continuously since the time of its inception.

Prof Damodar Acharya

It was during my tenure that the modernization of the SRIC office took place. What you see today is a complete rehashed version of what it was during the early 90s. A lot of brainstorming went into how to give the office a modern, corporate look. Under the leadership of Prof Damodar Acharya, the then Dean SRIC and Dr D Gunasekaran, the then Principal Administrative Officer (who was also the Registrar of the Institute), we visited a few corporate offices in Kolkata, to get an idea of a modern office set-up. We also concentrated on the work culture and environment, alongside a new corporate model. Workstations, with individual desktops were introduced along with in-service training for employees and new recruits. This included computer training, soft skill development training, training in office administration, rules’ implementation training and others.

Research Park, Rajarhat

After I took charge of the Establishment Section in the year 2006, the Institute took a policy to modernize all its administrative section on the lines of SRIC office. This called for a lot of effort, which had to be put in so as to get the desired infrastructure of a corporate office within IIT.

The best part of my service here at IIT Kharagpur would be the purchase of a piece of land from the Government of West Bengal to set up a Research Park, which will be operational very soon. I was one of the signatories in those official papers back in 2008.

Felicitating Sundar Pichai

We worked as a team under the leadership of Prof Samir Kumar Lahiri, the then Deputy Director and Prof. Anil K. Bhowmick, the then Dean SRIC, during IIT Kharagpur’s Golden Jubilee in 2001. It was a year-long celebration with an exhibition at Science City Kolkata, for three consecutive days. That huge event saw the participation of all departments of IIT Kharagpur, few industries and several colleges in Kolkata.

The work culture of the Institute was always highly appreciated by the guests / visitors to the Institute. Maintaining and nurturing a positive attitude to work and towards colleagues, I feel, is the need of the hour. Good conduct always pays off and it costs nothing. What do you say?”

Placement Begins

It is the time of the year when all eyes are towards the IITs – as December hits, so does the placement season at IITs. At IIT Kharagpur with 282 PPOs the Institute is aiming to secure 1000+ placements in less than a week’s time. Already three PSUs have recruited and more are expected in the coming months.

This year several first-time recruiters will visit the IIT Kharagpur campus including top corporate brands like Sony Japan, PayPal, P&G India, Nestle India, Nomura. The Institute will also be welcoming back international recruiters like Apple, Microsoft Redmond, Uber, Amex, Qualcomm, Mercari Japan among others.

“We have taken almost all the last year’s companies on board and some prominent Japanese companies along with two US companies. We are expecting double the offer in international profiles,” said an official at the Career Development Centre of IIT Kharagpur.

Apart from the prominent players which recruited last year, seven more companies are on board for the phase one recruitment at the Institute. Most of the profiles are in the areas of software development and consulting. Though there were apprehensions regarding market conditions, the internship and preplacement offers were highly promising touching all time high figures. Read More

Talking about the current market scenario and its potential impact on the recruitment, Prof. G P Rajasekhar, Chairman at IIT Kharagpur’s Career Development Centre remarked, “The PPO rate is very encouraging. We took proactive measures to attract companies by reviewing our Company Relation Index (CRI) and then upgraded a few companies. We are stretching our wings to accommodate more companies on a given day so that companies do have enough pool of students each day.”

A supposed challenge of 2.30 hours distance from Kolkata airport is also being addressed.

On day 1, thirty companies will be recruiting for fifty different profiles. The students are hoping for a high number of shortlisted candidates during the first week which will indicate the final number of offers made. The phase 1 will continue for 3 weeks in December.

An increasing trend in salary also was observed.

“This was expected especially with software and quant companies offering higher packages,” said an official.

A total of 220 companies have registered for recruitment in the phase one who will be interviewing more than 2000 students who have registered for placement opportunities in 2019-2020. By the end of the second phase about 500 students from Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Dual Degrees are expected to opt out from the placement process.

Japan making headline at IIT KGP for the first time

What is unique this year, is the presence of 5 Japanese corporations for phase I placement session. On  Day 1, Mercari Japan led the show with 6 international offers. On day 2, two more corporations Bizreach and Yahoo made 3 and 1 offers respectively for positions in the island-nation. WorksApplications, another Japanese firm recruited for one profile on day 3 while Rakuten is scheduled on day 6.

So what is attracting Japanese corporations to hire from IIT KGP this year?

“Compared to USA and EU, there is a much lower presence of IITians and bright Indian graduates in Japanese corporations. Now the industrial sector in Japan is looking forward to attracting talented youth from India. With Japanese companies showing significant interest in recruiting graduates from IIT KGP, a career in Japan is expected to become a popular choice for bright IIT graduates,” remarked Prof. G P Raja Sekhar, Head, Career Development Center (CDC) at IIT Kharagpur.

Bilateral relations between India and Japan has been on an upward trajectory since the late 1950s. This symbiosis between the technology leader and India’s giant market has made way for a robust technology-trade-investment corridor for the mutual benefit of both countries.

“IITKGP has several MoUs with Japanese universities in the field of Naval Architecture, Agriculture, Transportation studies, Medical Studies etc. and our Director has just returned from a tour of Japan with stronger possibilities of industrial and academic collaborations,” explained Prof. Baidurya Bhattacharya, Dean, International Relations, IIT Kharagpur.

Campus First-timers

This year more than 362 companies have already registered and more than 618 profiles have been opened by them. The figure includes 16 companies which would be recruiting from the campus for the first time. To name a few, ARPWood Capital, AB InBev, Blackrock, Bidgely, ARPWood, Auctus Advisors, MasterCard, Bizreach etc. “This will provide an ample opportunity to our students to choose their career wisely,” said the CDC Head.

Start-ups Hiring

This placement session is also witnessing the participation of some of India’s leading start-up business and the figure is touching 33 with Zomato, Ola, Oyo, Flipkart, Innovacer etc. and most of the other start-ups visiting the campus in the first few days of placement. “The students are quite enthusiastic to join in this sector, as being an emerging field, it will ensure the high growth of their career trajectory. Moreover, students are giving importance to the profile offered than merely the name of the companies. Startups are eager to participate as early as possible during the phase 1 placements at IITs. Students are more specific about the profile and they are very much comfortable with startups. They are of the opinion that the growth at startups is quick,” added the CDC Head.
